Socioeconomic
Structure In Los Angeles As A Stimulus For The 1992 Riots
[ send
me this paper ]
A 9 page research paper on social conditions which caused
the eruption of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. The writer
posits that the Rodney King verdict was merely a final
stimulus ('the straw that broke the camel's back') for the
ensuing violence but that various other social, economic,
cultural, and demographic factors contributed to it as
well. Conflict, race relations, and immigration to South
Central Los Angeles are of particular importance in this
insightful sociopolitical analysis. Bibliography lists 9
sources.

Recycling
Cities' Industrial Areas
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing decay in downtown Detroit, the
renovation of the L&N Railroad terminal in Knoxville,
Tennessee and the conversion of tobacco warehouses in
Durham, North Carolina to a pedestrian shopping mall.
These beautiful old buildings that have been sitting
vacant for decades can have a positive effect on the areas
around them. Narrow, twisting streets may not be conducive
to using them again as industrial sites, but there are
higher and better uses available. Whether used for shops,
restaurants, offices, apartments or a combination, cities'
old industrial areas can become vital once again, and in
ways never originally intended. Bibliography lists 4
sources.

Religious
Life in American Ethnic Communities
[ send
me this paper ]
A 10 page paper comparing the religious experience of
those living in American urban ghettos during the first
half of the twentieth century, as described in Chaim
Potok’s 'The Chosen;' Robert A. Orsi’s 'Madonna of
115th St;' and James Baldwin’s 'Go Tell It On The
Mountain.' The paper argues that while there are
distinctive differences in the way the Italian, Jewish,
and Black Pentecostal communities worshipped God, there
are remarkable similarities in the way that all the groups
discussed used religion as a cement to bind their
communities together. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Gangs
/ Chicago & L.A.
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page research overview of the social and economic
factors affecting the establishment of gangs in Chicago
and Los Angeles, the 'political' differences between the
formation of the gangs, expansion of gang territories, and

agencies and gang communities through several examples.

garbage dumps have upon members of the African-American
and Latino communities. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

Environmentally
Sustainable Cities: A Contradiction In Terms
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. There is no question that the notion of
environmentally sustainable cities represents a
contradiction in terms for the simple reason that the very
aspect of any sort of growth will have a detrimental
impact upon the environment. In light of the fact that the
world's population continues to explode, thus requiring
more and more room and resources in which to appease the
earth's inhabitants, the environment is facing continued
degradation while much of its wildlife is becoming
threatened. However, there are those who believe that the
notion of environmentally sustainable cities is more than
just a notion; indeed, they contend that modern design
will help to allow mankind and the environment to
harmoniously co-exist. The writer discusses
environmentally sustainable cities in relation to being a
contradiction in terms. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

The
Impact Of The Environment On Highway Construction
[ send

considers the impacts of environment on the physical,

engineer might address these issues when planning a
construction design. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

New
York City / Media Visual Imagery
[ send
me this paper ]
20 pages in length. The media image of New York City is
one that is both intriguing and dishonest; nowhere else
are there more accounts of stereotypical imagery than is
portrayed within the Big Apple. A number of various
entities have worked together though the decades to create
the larger than life image of New York City the world has
come to adopt; art, photography and film represent a
significant part of that influence. When one contemplates
the visual imagery of New York City as it relates to the
media, one does not have to think long before a
predisposed illustration comes to mind. Not unlike other
victims of media influence, New York City is perceived as
a twisted Mecca of entertainment, violence,
self-centeredness, insanity and raw indifference. The
writer discusses the various aspects of media visual
imagery as it relates to New York City. Bibliography lists
8 sources.

1877-1900:
Urban Immigrant And Growing Middle Class
[ send
me this paper ]
3 pages in length. The existence of the urban immigrant of
1877-1900 was not particularly well-received by the
growing middle class. The gulf that existed between the
two groups was primarily born from a sense of ethnic
privilege that had been established early on. It can be
argued that this rift that developed, which defined the
self-imposed status, proved to be a serious threat to the
overall social fabric. For nearly as long as man has
existed, social intolerance has been driving a wedge
between groups of people whose ambition is the same: to
better their existence through upward social movement.
This attitude has been carried down through the centuries,
despite much effort on all sides to abolish such
prejudicial practices. The writer discusses that although
slavery had all but been wiped out, there still existed
deep-seated resentment toward certain social classes for
all the unnecessary suffering minorities had been forced
to endure throughout history. Bibliography lists 4
sources.

Policies, Urban Politics, & Local Dominance
[ send

books of all of these authors, and then considers the
implications for regional interests. Bibliography lists 4
sources.

Segregation
& the Urban Setting
[ send
me this paper ]
This 20 page paper looks at the subject of segregation in
the urban setting. Several points are explored, including
African American history, the slave trade and migration to
the North. The thesis of this paper is that segregation is
more acceptable now than it has ever been in the past. The
reason why is due to the adoption of multiculturalism.
Several specific examples are noted and the topics of
unique African customs, rap music, fashion, ebonics, and
Kwanza are discussed. Bibliography lists 25 sources.

displacement. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Study
of a Local Park
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper which examines the many facets of a local
park in Southern California. The park, or more accurately,
the campground, is named NIRA and it is located in the
Santa Ynez mountains in the Los Padres National Forest,
which lies just outside Santa Barbara, California. This
park is predominantly used by day hikers and backpackers.
It is a region filled with incredible views of the
mountains and valleys, and also an area that offers
silence and seclusion. It is a prime example of all that
is good in a park as it is well kept and the visitors are
genuinely concerned with keeping the area as natural as
possible.

The
American Ideal Of Suburbia
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The American ideal of suburbia reflects
a trend of living that is conspicuous by the very
lifestyles of the people who live within such urban
sprawl. It is a decidedly different approach to existence
than that of its urban counterpart, which establishes
residency inside a significantly closed environment.
Suburbia represents freedom and an unencumbered feeling to
the degree that people are able to spread out and have
room to grow. Contrarily, metropolitan communities offer
nothing like the outdoorsy appeal of living at the
outskirts of town, a place where Americans can settle in
and take stock of their inherent independence. The writer
discusses the American deal of suburbia. No sources cited.

The
Contemporary Suburb / A Response to Fishman’s Technoburb
[ send
me this paper ]
In his work Bourgeois Utopias: The Rise and Fall of
Suburbia, Robert Fishman (1989) argued that the
development of a new kind of city, the technoburb, was
occurring that sharply contrasted the suburban development
of the 1960s and 1970s. This 8 page paper argues that
while the technoburb demonstrates some different elements
from earlier suburban regions, it also retains many of the
central characteristics of the old suburb. Bibliography
lists 10 sources.

The
Greek-American Community In Chicago
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The natural art of food peddling was
the primary talent brought over by the Greeks in the mid
to late 1800's. Their quest to find a better life and
considerable prosperity drew them to Chicago, first
arriving as ship captains and then once settled polishing
their peddling trade. The continued development of
food-related commerce made it an easy transition into the
restaurant industry, for which the Greek community is
famous. Indeed, one cannot speak of Greek Town without
also mentioning the intrinsic connection to delicious
food. The writer discusses how the Greek-Americans
represent significantly more than just food, explaining
how their customs, personal desires and political
aspirations served as their ticket to the United States
during a time when America symbolized the land of
opportunity. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Urban
Problems in Virginia Public Housing
[ send
me this paper ]
A 9 page paper discussing trends in public housing and
their effects on urban problems. With the ongoing
reductions in funds available through federal and state
governments for use in providing low-income housing,
cities increasingly are finding it necessary to turn to
the private sector and nonprofit groups to aid in
providing affordable housing. In the case of Richmond, the
city was able to use public housing funds to upgrade
decaying urban infrastructure while turning to private
sources to provide actual housing in the area the city
upgraded with the funds. The new creativity results in
more units being made available for habitation while also
contributing to a wider sense of community not possessed
by those still adhering to the standard method of
requiring full public funding. Bibliography lists 8
sources.

of effective urban planning to help keep it in check.

Urbanization
In The Late Nineteenth Century
[ send
me this paper ]
3 pages in length. The urbanization of America during the
latter part of the nineteenth century not only changed the
nation's values, but it also created unforeseen problems
with regard to the bustling growth of cities, the
complications of new technologies and the reactions that
people had to such significant transformation. Indeed, for
a society to survive, it must be willing to grow. However,
there comes a point when that growth turns into a
detriment more than the asset it was originally intended
to be -- such was the case with America's urbanization
during the late nineteenth century. The writer discusses
how urbanization changed America in the late nineteenth
century. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Why
Tacoma Was Not Selected As State Capital
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Tacoma, Washington, was not chosen to
represent the state as its capital for the same reasons
other similar cities were overlooked as well: Olympia
proved to be a more beneficial location for such an
important appointment. Granted, there are myriad variables
that come into play when the location of a state’s
capital is being evaluated, but there is always more than
just a handful of deciding – albeit sometimes
inconsequential factors – that ultimately determine the
best place for state government to reside. The writer
discusses various reasons why Tacoma may not have been the
best choice for Washington’s state capital. Bibliography
lists 5 sources.

Crime
in Detroit and Atlanta, 1986-1996
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page paper examining the possibility that the same
factors underlying Detroit's decline and loss of industry
were those contributing to Atlanta's rapid growth between
1986 and 1996. The paper finds through a literature review
that the two share very little similiarities aside from
black crime, police inefficiency and more typical urban
problems. It is true that Atlanta was growing rapidly, but
its growth was based in services rather than manufacturing
or any of the industrial pursuits that Detroit had lost
over the period of a generation. Based on the evidence
presented, the study concludes that each city was being
affected by globalization, but in very different ways and
certainly not within the same types of industries.

John
Kenneth Galbraith's "The Position Of Poverty"
And Robert B. Reich's "Why The Rich Are Getting
Richer And The Poor, Poorer": Compare/Contrast
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Within the literary boundaries of John
Kenneth Galbraith's "The Position Of Poverty"
and Robert B. Reich's "Why The Rich Are Getting
Richer And The Poor, Poorer," the reader is given a
significantly better understanding as to why there exists
such a tremendous separation between rich and poor. While
Galbraith cites the curse of capitalism, Reich tends to
focus more closely upon the decline in a decently paid
workforce, a contrast that effectively distinguishes Reich
and Galbraith. Reich notes that major corporations such as
AT&T, American Airlines and General Motors – just to
name a few – have ceased taking care of their employees,
choosing instead to seek out cheap labor as a means by
which to fortify even further their already overflowing
money pots. By doing so, one can readily surmise that the
middle class is slowly but surely being squeezed out as
the separation between upper and lower class. The writer
compares and contrasts these articles as they are found in
Lee A. Jacobus' "A World of Ideas." No
additional sources cited.

Middle-Class
Ideal Of The Suburban Community
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Suburbia represents a great deal of
importance for cities today in that it provides an outlet
for those who cannot or do not want to live within the
confines of an overpopulated environment. There exist
inherent problems for urban cities that have reached and
surpassed the number of people they can comfortably and
productively hold. This is when outlying districts come
especially into play, as they grant city dwellers the
opportunity to escape into a decidedly more serene
atmosphere. Not only does this diversion help to diffuse
potentially disastrous circumstances with respect to
problems associated with overcrowding, but it also enables
people to experience and appreciate a life other than that
of the rat race. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
